Inspiration

1. From previous research on the Internet of Things, I researched what this system means in the city scale, architectural scale and in this project I wanted to develop it in a home. How can these advanced technologies and the ecosystem they function in be used in the home? 

2. The second topic I was interested in was to design a less 'dry' interaction between a user and the smart device. How can these devices be used for a deeper, more emotional cause? 

3. The third area of research is the meaning of migration whatever the forces might be. The notion of moving from one's home into a new home. How can this transition be redesigned through the addition of smart devices. Devices in the home that are able to sense smells, record audio, detect motion, recognize objects, translate conversation and collect images. In this project, data collected from these kinds of devices is used towards the transition stage of migration. 


Design Intent

Designing a system that is focused on the mundane activities in the house. The little interactions and characteristics of objects that make the house a home.

Designing a system within the home that elevates the possibilities of using metadata that is collected constantly all around us. Combining dry technology with sentimental and emotional values of the home further reinventing the value of data.

Technology Research and Materiality:

Internet of Things in the Smart City

I researched the existent and non-existent technologies in the city and home. How can these technologies be combined or repurposed to be used as a part of the home. How can these devices become an intimate part of the user’s home. Using object recognition, facial recognition, voice recognition, voice recording, image recording and machine learning to research how the data collected in the smart home could be used in the recreation of memory.

Researching various objects of the home and choosing the chandelier as the focus object of the house. Because of its position in the home, above the heart of the home, signifying and reflecting the family. The value of the chandelier also being a factor, it is an object that is transported and kept for years to come. The metadata therefore will be stored in the pieces of the chandelier.

Design Research

Inspired by the IoT systems that influence and connect the home and the city. How can I design a system in which the inside of the home could be somehow recorded, the same way google earth records the earth and the streets. 

Chandeliers are significant fixtures in the Iranian house and represent many values. The position of the fixture is centered in the living room as it is a room that is most seen by guests. It is also one of the fixtures that is often packed into bubble wrap piece by piece and shipped cross continentally to whatever country the family is migrating to. Although not portable, most families make a point of taking their chandeliers with them.


Technology Research and Testing:

  1. Using a variety of technologies accessible to me, ranging from voice recognition, voice recordings (manual and automatic), facial recognition, camera motion sensor capture, object recognition camera, proximity sensor.

  2. I conducted testing through all of these technologies, recording and documenting results

  3. I also conducted a focus group that would answer questions like “what is the home?”, “what objects remind you of your childhood home?”, “which parts of the home are the clearest memory to you?”, “what do you hear when you think about your childhood home?”

  4. I used the documented data on a focus group, to find out what kind of emotions the data triggers…how recognizable or unrecognizable are they? I used a series of adjectives and asked the group to write down which resonated with what they were seeing/hearing.

  5. I then analyzed and gathered the technological data and impact in addition to the questions i had answered through the focus group.

  6. The results were combined into the Permanent Address: ‘A HOME” that remembers the everyday sounds and activities through a chandelier.

The chandelier is a multi sensory capturing device placed in the center of the home facing towards the area of the home with the most movement.

The chandelier is a fixture however a piece of the chandelier can be detached containing the data that was collected through the act of sensory capture.

Events and Non-events

The feeling of the home is created through a multi sensory experience, therefore I captured images through motion, through facial recognition, audio, smell, 24 hour long shot video of the view from my window and a long shot video of a carpet.

Through a series of events and non-events I captured a living room. Events being the capture through motion sensor and facial recognition Non-events being the long shot of the window. The intent of this project is not to capture THE MEMORY but to capture the overall experience in a place.

Interaction Design

How can the users in the home interact with a chandelier? How can they pick out pieces of the object? How does the object collect the metadata and how is the data then removed and placed into the seeing device. 

The large amount of data that the device can capture creates a collection through which the essence can be recreated in the new home as a part of the living room. Imagining that it would be installed in the new home, an empty area to be filled with digital furniture in order to remember the previous home.  The chandelier is a capturing device placed in the center of the home. Upon the resident’s command the device is able to capture the “essence” of the space through the capture of multi sensory data. In addition it is capable of collecting large amount of photos, durational footage, smell and other sensory capture.
