The John Lennon Experience

Project with Emblematic Group

I was a part of a project where the focus point was John Lennon, the project was created through months of brainstorming, conceptualizing, ideation, visuals and experiential design. As UX Designer on this project I was the lead on researching John’s life, compiling interactions dissected from his life and creating micro-interactions for the user experience. The experiences were visualized through multimedia across digital platforms in order to communicate complex interactions in virtual reality.

The user is not only watching his life but actively participating in his “footsteps”.

The intention of this project was to recreate the essence of his personality and creating a unique user experience that is intuitive.

User Experience

Researching various major stages of John’s life. Finding areas that would be significant and interesting to recreate. Time periods chosen were through the colors representing the specific decade, the music and dancing, the political climate and specific mannerisms of the time.

The research of John’s life was then analyzed and interesting eras were sectioned into each part of the experience. I conceptualized with the team the different experiences that would contribute to understanding John. The user is intended to be guided through the experience intuitively thought a series of extreme interactions and experiences.

The user is intended to be guided through the experience intuitively thought a series of extreme interactions and experiences. Each section of the experience consists of many little interactions with the environment.

John as a person

Researching various major stages of John’s life. Finding areas that would be significant and interesting to recreate. Time periods chosen were through the colors representing the specific decade, the music and dancing, the political climate and specific mannerisms of the time.

The challenge of creating this experience was staying as true as possible to John’s character and personality. Keeping the time period realistic and the interactions within the environment relevant. The user experience is meant to be intuitive and unique while taking hats off to the legend that is John.

Yoko Ono Poetry Pieces

Grapefruit by Yoko is a square shaped book of poetry. Each poem is very short and very theatrical like. It is composed of strange and surreal micro interactions. We used the book as inspiration for the experience.

Goals

  1. Capturing John’s personality through extensive research of his personal and public relationships.

  2. Researching how he was raised and his mannerisms.

  3. Analyzing what he was most famous for in terms of character.

  4. Synthesizing the research into interactions experienced by a user while keeping authenticity.

  5. Understanding the various decades of his lifetime that were politically and culturally significant in history.

  6. Understanding him through Beatles and Yoko together and separately.

  7. Creating a sensory overload in the experience and have the user be able to navigate through it without loosing balance.

  8. Creating a surreal experience while maintaining comfort for the user.

The prototypes were presented to John Lennon experts for impact approval. The project is intended to recreate the life of John through interactions that compliment his personality, his philosophy and stay true to the time period represented.

User Tasks in the Experience

  1. Psychedelic stage of the experience consists of objects and elements relating to the reflecting era. The user is able to navigate through a slightly disorienting environment leading into the next stage.

  2. The user is able to experience the “piece” that John strived for. The experience speeds up and slows down as the user navigates through the space.

  3. The environment consists of organic elements that grow in the space. Nature is a big component of the composition. Some elements consist of clues that will assist with an intuitive interaction.

  4. A significant part of the user navigation through the experience is through music. Certain elements in the space trigger music which helps the user with micro interactions leading up to the following stages.
